Military Equipment of Ancient Rome

During the 4th and 5th centuries, Roman armies were some of the most powerful on earth. It was known by the locals that one man from the Roman army was worth several men from any other civilization. Ancient Rome earned its success not only through the discipline and dedication of its soldiers but the high tech armor and weapons these warriors wore. Their thick, metal armor allowed them to stay protected from swords, daggers, spears, arrows, and any other dangerous weapon that threatened their lives. There are quite a few items that set Roman soldiers apart from others during their time, including their helmets, weapons and armor.

Galea

An ancient Roman helmet, also called a “galea”, was the soldier’s thick metal head protection gear. Roman helmets were inspired by Viking helmets and also those worn by the Etruscans. The helmets often included facial masks for added protection and beautiful decorations. The helmets were mostly red and gold in color and accented by thick crests made from plumes or horse hair.

Roman Shields

Roman soldiers also had many elaborate weapons that helped them in battle. Ancient Roman shields helped to protect soldiers from getting hit with arrows or swords. Roman shields were often made from thin metal that could be easily carried by the soldiers.

Roman Weapons

Another weapon that was popular among the Romans was called a baldric. This was a long, solid belt worn over the shoulder that could be used like a sword. A pugio was a dagger used as a sidearm by Roman soldiers. The pugio was equipped with a large, leaf-shaped blade that was 18 to 28 inches long and 5 inches wide. Both the blade and the handle were made from metal. The Gladius was an ancient Roman sword used in battle. It had a two foot blade and was used by Roman legionaries in the 3rd century BC. There were two different kinds of these swords, including the Mainz Gladius and the Pompeoo Gladius. Ancient Roman warriors also used javelins, daggers, bows and darts when engaged in battle.

The Roman Empire

All of these ancient weapons helped them to protect themselves. Roman soldiers were thoroughly trained to use all of these different kinds of weapons properly. The teachers started Roman soldiers off as young boys who learned how to properly fight with a sword or a dagger. These boys soon evolved into men who could kill other armies like machines.

The Roman Empire was the greatest of its kind back in the early 3rd, 4th, and 5th centuries BC. This was in large part due to the highly advanced weapons that the soldiers used. These weapons went through different evolutions over the ages but still stayed effective and useful for the soldiers. People in today’s world remain captivated by stories about ancient Rome and all of the battles that they were able to win thanks to their amazing weapons. Ancient Rome inspired many movies, books and television shows and is a legendary part of history and the world
